The Atlantic Water Gardens AquaSkim strainer basket is the debris collection basket inside the Oase AquaSkim surface skimmer. The strainer basket intercepts floating leaves, seed pods, insects, and organic debris drawn in through the surface weir before they reach the pump. A cracked, deformed, or fouled strainer basket that cannot be cleaned adequately should be replaced to restore the skimmer's full debris capture capacity.
Keep the Pump Free of Floating Debris
Without a functioning strainer basket, floating debris passes directly from the skimmer intake to the pump — fouling the pump screen, reducing flow, and potentially jamming the impeller. The basket requires regular emptying during high-debris periods such as autumn leaf fall in Canadian ponds. When the basket mesh stretches or the basket frame cracks, debris escapes around the damaged area and bypasses the filtration purpose. Regular inspection and timely replacement maintain the skimmer's effectiveness as the first line of debris protection for the pump.

How to Replace
Remove the AquaSkim from the pond and open the access panel to the strainer basket compartment. Remove the old basket, empty its debris contents, and discard if damaged. Install the replacement basket, confirming it sits fully within the housing without gaps at the sides or bottom where debris could bypass. Return the skimmer to the pond and monitor debris capture performance. Empty the basket at least weekly during autumn and after storms.
