When to Replace
Mag-drive pumps like the MD550 can run for years without service, but the ceramic shaft and impeller bearing cup gradually wear. The first sign is usually increased noise — a grinding or rattling sound during operation. Flow drop-off follows as the impeller wobbles. Replacing the complete assembly at the first sign of noise prevents further damage to the bearing cup moulded into the pump housing, which is not a field-replaceable part.

How to Replace
Unplug the MD550 and remove from the water. Twist the front cover counter-clockwise to open the impeller chamber. Remove the old assembly and seat the new impeller unit into the bearing cup. Reinstall the cover and confirm smooth rotation. Return to service. Inspect annually during spring pond startup.
